Activities
Glencoe and the surrounding area of Lochaber offers a myriad of varied activities. Thrill seeking dare devils and those who like life to be a little more sedate will be pleased in equal measure when trying to choose from a long list of things to do in the area.
Walking is one of the main reasons for visitors in the area. With such a vast amount of stunning scenery it is easy to see why. A day's hillwalking up one of the more challenging routes - Buachaille Etive Mor for example - can be hugely satisfying especially when on a clear day you are rewarded with some of the best panoramic views in Scotland. However coastal and forestry commission walks which may be less strenuous are frequently just as beautiful in there own way.
Climbers will be delighted by the impressive range of climbs that are on offer in Glencoe. These are further varied by the changeable conditions in light and weather. A climb carried out one day in the height of summer under a blistering sun will be a very different one to that carried out in the winter months, when a covering of sheet ice and snow cover most of the mountains. Both conditions, to most climbers, are equally rewarding and offer an equal amount of excitement and adventure.
With the world downhill mountain bike championships being held annually in Fort William the area has gained quite a reputation for mountain biking. Many of the forestry commission tracks offer superb downhill tracks - you just need to get to the top first! Alternatively, to take a more relaxed approach, a cycle along the water front at Ardgour is beautiful and takes in views down the Corran narrows to Lismore.
Those who live for the snow are well catered for with two completely different ski centres in the area. Closest to The Glencoe Hotel is the Glencoe Ski Centre which is the oldest in Scotland. It is a small centre but offers some of the more challenging pistes available. Nevis Range, just outside Fort William, is the newest centre in Scotland and has a large number of runs of varying difficulties. They also have a huge expanse of off piste skiing in the Back Corrie area.
